9780851864037: Analytical Applications of Spectroscopy II

Synopsis

Analytical Applications of Spectroscopy II provides wide-ranging coverage of recent developments in analytical spectroscopy and particularly the common themes of chromatography - spectroscopy combinations, new techniques and data handling. These themes have played an increasingly important part in advances in spectroscopic techniques and emphasize the multidisciplinary approach of present research. The book presents an up-to-date review of the major spectroscopic techniques and supplements the information found in the previous volume published in 1988. Each section includes review areas of current research, as well as short reports of new developments in those areas, written by spectroscopists who have made major contributions in their respective disciplines.

Synopsis

The second volume of "Analytical Applications of Spectroscopy" includes papers presented at the "Spectroscopy Across the Spectrum" conference held at Hatfield UK, in July 1990. A number of spectroscopists gathered to present reviews of their specialist areas within the context of themes common to all spectroscopies. Two of the distinctive themes were chemometrics and the combination of spectroscopy and microscopy. In spectroscopy/microscopy, "radiation" links the two techniques by passing through the microscope to the spectrometer; while in chemometrics it is software which provides the means to combine "information" from different techniques. By analogy with instrumental combined techniques, in which sample is passed from one instrument to another in a hyphenated system, these links can be represented by a "soft hyphen". While the difference may seem trivial, it is important because of the unlikely combinations it brings to mind.

This is particularly evident in contributions involving near infrared spectroscopy but, as Professor Grasselli's introduction makes clear, the development of combined techniques which do not require the mechanical transport of sample are of increasing importance to the future of analytical spectroscopy. This volume has been organized according to the principal spectroscopic technique discussed in each paper. However, for many papers, it was necessary to make a rather arbitrary decision on the most appropriate section.
