The Nelson Almanac: A Book of Days Recording Nelson's Life and the Events That Shaped His Era
A Record of Nelson's Life and the Events that Shaped his Era
The Nelson Almanac is a glorious jumble of facts and events brought together as a primer for the aspiring student of Nelson's era.
Essentially, the book has three basic elements. It is biographical, with lively and provocative articles written by some of the most respected modern-day Nelson experts and historians. It is a book of his letters, with Nelson himself giving us first hand information of his experiences. And it is an historical document, encompassing revolution, invasion and war, discovery, invention and cultural achievement.
These elements have been woven together to produce a kaleidoscopic tapestry of the period. Structured as a diary, each month is prefaced with an article scrutinising a particular aspect of Nelson's life or naval career. These are followed by day of the week, with a date for Nelson taken from his letters and papers, together with a date in world history between 1758 and 1805. Certain dates are further embellished in shorter articles and captioned illustrations which appear on the opposite page to the diary entry.
The majority of the stunning images that bring the characters and events of the period to life are sourced from the Warwick Leadley Gallery which holds one of the world's finest collections of Nelson artifacts.
