British Cinema of the 90s has been both saluted as a significant cinematic renaissance and derided as the glossiest of a long sequence of false dawns. In either case it has become clear that the terms of discussion have changed considerably with new developments in production leading to a big increase in films being made. A need therefore exists for an overview of the industry in the 1990s as well as an account of the changing images of Britain on the big screen. Systematically examining all major aspects of British cinema, the contributors deal with box office successes like "Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bean, The Full Monty "and "Trainspotting" as well as critically acclaimed films such as "Under the Skin" and "Love is the Devil." Drawing upon a range of experts, the book explores such issues as the role of distribution and exhibition, the Americanization of British film culture, the difficulties of British films in getting theatrical release, Hollywood and Europe, the impact of youth-oriented cinema, the heritage film, and changing representations of sexuality and ethnicity.
