Synopsis

Pelagius was born around AD 350 and died some time after AD 418. Arriving in Rome in the late fourth century, he soon acquired a considerable reputation and wrote his commentary on the Pauline Epistles. Shortly before Alaric's seizure of Rome he fled to Palestine, where he became embroiled with Jerome, and the two lost treatises which he wrote in his defence attracted the unfavourable attention of Augustine, who had already been alerted to the Pelagian threat to orthodox doctrine. Though the BiB.R. REES, sometime Professor of Greek at Cardiff and Birmingham, is a former Principal of St David's University College, Lampeter, Wales, and President of the Classical Association.
