The salmon is one of the most intriguing and challenging of fish: intriguing because a large part of its life cycle is still a question of conjecture; challenging because it is one of the most exacting and thrilling fish to pursue. Neil Graesser's study of the salmon for the "Angling Library" series follows the already established pattern of a full biological account of the species, intended to further an understanding of its habits, followed by a discussion of the techniques to be employed when fishing for salmon. He describes the life cycle of this fascinating fish: its early years in fresh water, its progression to the sea to feed on to maturity, and its final homeward migration to its native river to spawn. He surveys the threat posed by various predators, by changeable water flows and natural obstructions, and by alterations in land and water use on the river catchment. Of particular interest is the author's discussion of the areas of the salmon's life which are difficult to research - the movements and unusual habits of this anadromous species while at sea. Once adult fish return to fresh water they rarely feed, and therefore their taking habits are difficult to predict; this fact, as well as their size, makes them the most sought-after game fish of all. Neil Graesser's lifetime study of the species gives his observations on techniques for taking salmon, with which the book concludes, an especial weight.
