For centuries the Christian church has had two Testaments in
one Bible. Yet the relationship between the Old and New Testaments is such
and unsettled issue that the Latin American theologian Juan Luis Segundo
complains: `This basic and important question has scarcely been given a
clear answer over the past twenty centuries of Christina living.'
In the first part of this book David L. Baker outlines the problem of the
relationship between the Testaments and then provides a survey of the
various ways it has been viewed in the history of interpretation. In the
second part he critically examines four modern `solutions': the New
Testament as the essential Bible; the Old and New Testaments as being
equally Christian Scripture; the Old and New Testaments as one salvation
history. The third part considers three key themes in the ongoing debate:
typology, promise and fulfilment, continuity and discontinuity. Finally, Dr
Barker puts forward his own suggestions towards the solution of what
continues to be a key issue in biblical studies.
