The Water Resources Programme of the Commonwealth Secretariat advises and supports governments on policies and strategies for effective management of water resources, including the use of the integrated water resources management (IWRM) approach. The world's population is becoming increasingly urbanised. Natural rates of population growth are high in many urban areas, and in many developing countries these is a strong trend of net migration into towns. Material flux from many urban wastes is not easily attenuated in the immediate vicinities of the cities, so rivers and aquifers in or close to cities are being polluted. Many of the water problems related to urbanisation could well be avoided if the development of water resources for urban populations are considered as integral components of sustainable development. This publication is a result of a series of case studies carried out across Commonwealth countries, looking at good groundwater protection practice, areas which need improvement, and areas where practice is poor. All the reports are country-based. Each looks at a generic national problem, but focuses on a particular area to highlight the problems and investigate possible solutions. All the reports used the capital city or state, except the India report, which is based on a city-state.
