About the editor Dr Clare Gerada has been a GP for 14 years in a large inner city practice, where she set up and continues to run the CLAS (Consultancy Liaison Addiction Service) Team. Clare has championed the cause of primary care management of substance misuse, both within the Department of Health and within the Royal College of General Practitioners. She is the Director and Lead for the RCGP Substance Misuse Unit and was the previous Senior Policy Officer for drugs and alcohol. She has been instrumental in designing and delivering the RCGP Certificate and much of the success of the programme can be directly attributed to her leadership. This book has been produced to disseminate some of the material used in the Certificate programme to a wider readership and we hope that this will further enhance standards of management in this field.
