Illustrated frontispiece portrait of Ferdinand Magellan after an anonymous painting in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Printed in Great Britain by W & J Mackay Limited, Chatham. This Folio Society edition presents an English translation of Antonio Pigafetta's firsthand account of Magellan's expedition (1519 - 1522), based on a 16th-century manuscript held in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. The translation, by cartographic historian R. A. Skelton, aims to remain faithful to the tone and content of the original while making the text accessible to modern readers. It is adapted from the two-volume Yale University Press edition of 1969. While the full translation of Pigafetta's text is preserved with only minor emendations, this edition omits certain portions of the original introduction-including detailed manuscript comparisons and descriptions-as well as notes on supplementary sources and variant readings. Five of the illustrations are reproduced from the facsimile volume of the Yale edition. Seller Inventory # 20250513010
