Review

[the author's objectives} have been beautifully fulfilled in an eminently readable fashion. Several good points make the book better than average. There is a splendid introduction that explains the subject matter of solid state physics and that impresses on the reader the rewards of studying this subject.

Synopsis

This comprehensive textbook is suitable for college and undergraduate students with only one course on solid state physics in their curriculum and demands only a knowledge of elementary wave mechanics, atomic and general physics. The text gives students a basic understanding of the properties of solids, and, in particular, metals. Physical phenomena are presented in the light of simple models, and experimental data are taken from the solid state research literature. It is a modern, illustrated work and treats the most recent advances in solid state physics such as quasicrystals, high-Tc superconductors and heavy fermion systems. SI units are used throughout and chapters are provided with problems (and answers) to test the reader's grasp of the material.
