It also contains thought-provoking practical,Jchapters on layout planning and building, electrical wiring, track laying, locomotives, carriages and wagons, scenery and operating. Finally, it explains the organisation of the hobby, the clubs, the press, the commercial manufacturers, the distributing and retail houses, and the accepted model railway standards, scales and gauges. All in all, it is even more compulsive reading!
Norman Simmons has been an active railway modeller since the 1930s and is well qualified to write on the subject, having contributed a number of articles on railway modelling to Airfix Magazine. His book, which has been described by the magazine Railway Modeller as 'an excellent, practical textbook on our hobby', makes an ideal primer for the beginner. However, this informative and well-illustrated book also offers plenty of useful hints and tips for experienced modellers.
