Synopsis
A book highlighting the multitude of little-known actions, places of interest and the activities of the men who served in this area where most regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies saw service during the Great War. Although much has been written of the Ploegsteert (Plugstreet to the troops) links with Bruce Bairnsfather's 'Old Bill' and Winston Churchill plus its position on the southern slopes of the shoulder of the Messines Ridge, little has been documented of its importance during the earlier and mid-stages of the war. An essential companion when visiting this area of the front, well written by two men who really did know their stuff. Ploegsteert—“Plugstreet” to the troops—was long seen as a quiet sector, yet it saw fierce fighting in the war’s early years. This study examines lesser-known actions, key sites, and the experiences of British and Commonwealth units stationed there.
