The book will be welcomed wherever church organs are played, and especially in the North of England where Renn was so active. Samuel Renn, the son of a coachman, was born in 1786 at Kedleston Hall, near Derby, the house of his parents' employer. At the age of 13 he was sent to London to be apprenticed to his uncle, James Davis, a self-taught and highly successful organ-builder. In the course of time Davis retired and handed the business to Renn, who made the bold decision to leave London and set up his workshop in the northern wilderness near Manchester.
