Synopsis
Increasing demands for the collection, processing and dissemination of information are leading to the development of integrated circuits. The ultimate goal of this evolution in communications is the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), a worldwide public telecommunications network able to transmit and process all types of information. The concept of ISDN is introduced and background aspects - in law, standardization, the existence of an Integrated Digital Network (IDN) etc are described. A profile is also provided of ISDN activities and progress in the UK, individual European countries, the US and Japan. Emphasis is given to the importance of standardization in this field, an important requirement for the effective development of ISDN in the future. Finally, attention is given to local transmission techniques, PABX access to ISDN, and the user perspective (for example, expectations, user needs, the views of corporate users).
