Synopsis
The last decade of old Septimus Howard's life sees many upheavals. War comes to Caxley, and his favorite grandson Edward, a pilot, brings home a wife who seems too cold and aloof for the Howard family. Miss Read is actually Mrs. Dora Saint, whose novels draw on her own memories of living and teaching in a small English village. She and her husband, a retired schoolmaster, have one daughter.
