Pop art followed virtually on the heels of the worldwide success of Abstract Expressionism, yet it is conventionally seen as constituting a complete break with what went before. Pop sometimes seems to have leapt fully-formed to the forefront of American art. Despite the enormous popular enthusiasm which the movement aroused (perhaps in part because of it), the origins of what would be called Pop have received surprisingly little critical attention. "Hand-Painted Pop" seeks to change that situation, by focusing on the most crucial period of development: 1955-62. It is our hope that the works presented here, which include both famous masterpieces and rarely seen early works, will form the basis for an ongoing re-evaluation of this important period of transition in American art.
