Synopsis
This volume presents eight sections that survey the status of various fields of aging research, combining updated descriptions of some of the areas covered in previous volumes with chapters dealing with aspects of aging not previously reviewed in this series. The volume begins with an overview of the evolution of aging research, followed by a detailed examination of the theories, evolution and genetics of aging. The next five sections focus on the immunology, neurobiology, endocrinology, cell biology and biochemistry of aging, respectively. Some of the topics explored include changes in T-cell-mediated immunity with age, synaptic regulation of neurotransmitter function in aging, the effect of aging in tissue culture, the effect of aging on translation and transcription, and an update on the effects of food restriction. The final section covers drug metabolism in aging, with emphasis on the effects of aging on drug disposition.
