The publication of the "2008 Academic Library Trends and Statistics" marks the 11th year of ACRL's effort to provide timely data on academic library management on an annual basis. The ultimate goal is to represent libraries from all institutions if higher learning in the United States and Canada. With 1,533 institutions reporting out of a sample of 3,007 the total represents 51% of all institutions. As was done previously, the survey collected data on a range of library operations, including collections, expenditures for operations, expenditures for computers and electronic resources, personnel and public services, and demographic information such as Ph.D.s granted and faculty and enrollment statistics. In addition, ratios such as support staff as a percent of total staff, serial expenditures as a percent of total library materials expenditures, and others are provided. These data are intended to provide useful comparisons among peer groups as well as to facilitate benchmarking across various time frames.
