Synopsis
This volume of selections from Evelyn Waugh's early travel writings comprises "all that I wish to preserve of the four travel books I wrote between the years 1929 and 1935". It includes accounts of a Mediterranean pleasure cruise, of the coronation of the Emperor Haile Selassie in Abyssinia in 1930 and of the Italian invasion five years later, of visits to Aden and Brazil. These early accounts of journeys made to remote places at a time when Waugh "had no fixed home and no possessions which would not conveniently go on a porter's barrow" reveal the merciless eye and sharp wit which were to characterize his novels - "Decline and Fall", "Scoop", "A Handful of Dust" and "Brideshead Revisited".

About the Author
Evelyn Waugh was born in Hampstead in 1903. His first novel, Decline and Fall, was published in 1928 and it was soon followed by: Vile Bodies (1930), Black Mischief (1932), A Handful of Dust (1934) and Scoop (1938). He travelled extensively, served in the Royal Marines and the Royal Horse Guards and continued to write, winning many prestigious literary awards. Brideshead Revisited was first published in 1945. Evelyn Waugh died in 1966.
