About the Authors
Erik M. Heen is associate professor of New Testament and Greek at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Philip D. W. Krey is Ministerium of New York Professor of Early and Medieval Church History, and president of Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has also translated Nicholas of Lyra's commentary on the Apocalypse. General Editor Thomas C. Oden recently retired as the Henry Anson Buttz Professor of Theology at The Theological School, Drew University, Madison, New Jersey. In addition to serving as general editor of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, he is the author of many theological works, including a three-volume systematic theology.

These homilies serve to anchor the excerpts chosen by the editors of this volume because of their unique place in the history of interpretation. In addition to being the first comprehensive commentary on the letter, they deeply influenced subsequent interpretation in both the East and the West, and their rhetorical eloquence has long been acknowledged.
