9780826489548: The Politics of Aesthetics

Synopsis

The Politics of Aesthetics rethinks the relationship between art and politics, reclaiming "aesthetics" from the narrow confines it is often reduced to. Jacques Rancière reveals its intrinsic link to politics by analysing what they both have in common: the delimitation of the visible and the invisible, the audible and the inaudible, the thinkable and the unthinkable, the possible and the impossible.

Presented as a set of inter-linked interviews, The Politics of Aesthetics provides the most comprehensive introduction to Rancière's work to date, ranging across the history of art and politics from the Greek polis to the aesthetic revolution of the modern age.

Already translated into five languages, this English edition of The Politics of Aesthetics includes a new afterword by Slavoj Zizek, an interview for the English edition, a glossary of technical terms and an extensive bibliography.

It includes incisive analyses of the uses and abuses of the concept of modernity, the relationship between art and mechanical reproduction, the logic of facts and fiction in history, the positive contradiction at work in modern literature, and the notion of politicized art. Already translated into five languages, the current edition also includes a concise introduction to Rancière's work, an afterword by Slavoj Zizek, an interview for the English edition, a glossary of technical terms, and an extensive bibliiography.' ***"A benchmark, this compact book shows why Rancière is one of the most compelling thinkers and writers in France since Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze." - Tom Conley - Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, Harvard University. [Quote and review quote taken from the back wrapper] ***'Jacques Rancière (born 10 June 1940) is a French philosopher, Professor of Philosophy at European Graduate School in Saas-Fee and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris VIII: Vincennes?Saint-Denis. After co-authoring "Reading Capital" (1965) with the structuralist Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser and others, and after witnessing the 1968 political uprisings, his work turned against Althusserian Marxism, and he later came to develop an original body of work focused on aesthetics' [Wiki] ***A later 2010 printing of the first UK paperback edition in near fine condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # PB303
