Thomas Stothard was a highly-esteemed illustrator in his time but was subsequently relegated to a minor place in the history of English art. The author addresses the reasons for this and how his work reveals the changing nature of the artist's role in an increasingly industrialized society. She examines the ways in which Stothard catered to the market in history paintings, ceramics, silverwork, landscape, sculpture, and above all, book illustrations. She explores his long and intimate association with John Flaxman and William Blake. The book includes a comprehensive checklist of his book illustrations.
