About the Author

Ruth M. Kleinpell, PhD, RN-CS, FAAN, FAANP, FCCM, is Director of the Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship at Rush University Medical Center and a Professor at Rush University College of Nursing, Chicago Illinois. She is also a Nurse Practitioner at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago Illinois. She serves as Chair of the American Academy of Nursing's Expert Panel on Acute and Critical Care, which has received funding by the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing for the

REASN (Resourcefully Enhancing Aging in Specialty Nursing) web-based modular project, now in creation. Other recent awards include recipient of the first American Association of Critical Care Nursing Impact Research Grant ($50,000) and the AACN's 2010 Flame of Excellence Award for sustained regional and national contributions to acute and critical care nursing.
