Synopsis

This is a history of the Pacific islands in the 20th century. A major theme of the book is the extent to which long-standing island-centred approaches to Pacific islands history are becoming modified as the Pacific islands have, in this century, increasingly become a part of both Pacific rim and world systems of investment, trade and defence. Rather than a simple study in European/Islander "culture contact", the book examines more subtle interactions between and amongst indigenous people themselves, and their complex and changing relationships and fortunes with regional and global social, economic, military and political forces.
