From the Darkness of Auschwitz to the Light of Jerusalem
As a convert to Judaism, I wrote this book in order to seek and to affirm a truth, a good, and a meaning in human life. This affirmation comes by way of and inspite of a personal collision with the Shoah and a personal pilgrimage toward a light that even the Shoah cannot comprehend. I know that, as a Jew, I must be a Jew--don the tallis and tefillin, observe the rites and the rituals of our fathers, all of it--if I am to meet my responsibility for the life all around me. And if I am to refuse the Nazis a posthumous victory. As I look around at the worship of power, pleasure, and possessions, I sometimes wonder whether they have not had their victory. But we do not have the luxury to despair. There is too much at stake for that. Too many lives. Therefore we must affirm what there is to love and to hold dear, especially when the Most Dear and the Most High are most threatened. Only by affirming it--only by loving it--can we ever hope to understand it. And we love it, as we love the Holy One, by lovingour fellow human being.
