The Roses in my Carpets is a story about hope amid adversity
In 1992 I went to Peshawar Pakistan and visited my Afghani refugee foster child named Kareem, to whom this book is dedicated.
It was a meeting I will never forget.
I took many pictures of Kareem and his family and there was one picture in particular, that touched me.
In this picture, Kareem's older brother is sitting huddled, with his knees drawn up to his chest, and his hand to his mouth.
There is a haunted look on his face. I wrote this story because of that look on his face.
During the production of this book, Ronald Himler, the illustrator, asked for any photographs I had of Kareem and his family to use as reference.
I sent him some, including that picture of Kareem's older brother.
It is amazing that Mr. Himler picked up that same look of vulnerability and transferred it to the main character of The Roses in My Carpets.
It's the second picture in the book, and it still sends chills down my spine.
This book is a labour of love.
It is based on the story of a refugee foster child, and so I have pledged half the royalties I receive to refugee children all over the world.
With the advance, I sponsored three children in total. One child in Bosnia, and two from Afghanistan.
Rukhsana Khan brings us to the reality that faces so many of the world's children. This story was inspired by her meeting with one unforgettable boy and his family. Rukhsana Khan is the author of Muslim Child and Bedtime Ba-a-alk. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Hardback. Condition: Good. Himler, Ronald (illustrator). For a young refugee living with loss and terror-filled memories, time is measured by the next bucket of water, the next portion of bread, and the next call to prayer. Here, where everything - walls, floor, courtyard - is mud, a boy's heart can still long for freedom, independence, and safety. And here, where life is terribly fragile, the strength to endure grows out of need. But the strength to dreams comes from within. Seller Inventory # CIN0823413993G
