The filling stitches in this book were developed to show the creative needlecrafter what interesting embroidery can be obtained from the kind of everyday things which are so often taken for granted. These stitches are intended to stimulate the imagination; they are a means to an end rather than an end in themselves. Exceptionally clear line drawings, accompanied by brief explanatory captions, illustrate the three sections on, respectively, Couched Fillings, Lacy and Miscellaneous Filings, and Canvas Stitches. Sixteen pages of photographs demonstrate some of the ways in which these new filling stitches can be applied. The ideas given in the chapters in this book were developed to show the creative person what interesting embroidery can be obtained from everyday things which are so often taken for granted. They are intended to fire the imagination, and should be regarded as a means to an end, rather than an end in themselves. Notes taken by an embroiderer to develop an idea work better if they are accompanied by a sketch or diagram and from small diagrams, it is an easy step to sketch a whole theme so that it can be translated into embroidery. Small sketches can lead to enlargements which are suitable for all kinds of embroidered articles; but it is also true that enlargements may require some additions, but it is best not cram too much in, as some simple stitches can really develop the design. Once a simple design has been created, it should be embroidered quite freely. Suitability for purpose must be considered, but where durability and laundering do not need to be taken into account, it's worth experimenting with unusual threads and other materials. In terms of method, it is absolutely necessary to use a frame for most stitches, as the background must be taut, and very often both hands are required to manipulate the threads. The author mentions that it is easier and quicker to sew with both hands keeping the left hand on top of the work, and the right underneath
