This book takes advantage of the recent surge of interest in monotypes - images that have been transferred from a painted surface to paper. There are many different ways of performing monotype techniques but the author of this book points to two basic techniques - the subtractive, in which a medium is painted onto a painting plate and the image is developed by scratching or wiping away the paint, and the direct or additive method, where the process resembles the way an artist might work on canvas or paper. After opening with a discussion of materials and methods of transfer, from hand to printing press, the book details the basic subtractive and additive techniques. Follow-up chapters describe step-by-step processes in a multitude of media including watercolour, oil, acrylic, ink, collage as well as an extensive section on advanced techniques. Each section is supported by examples of monotype art from such artists as Degas, Prendergast, Joseph Raffael and Carolyn Brady.
