Dust jacket notes: "For all who love to draw outdoors, here is the only book that demonstrates how to draw every major element of the landscape in pencil - the artist's most common tool and most faithful companion. In this elegantly illustrated book, author Ferdinand Petrie explores all the possibilities a lead pencil offers the artist for drawing outdoor subjects, guiding the reader through the various stages of pencil drawing. Petrie proves that a simple lead pencil can be manipulated to create finished drawings that rival the beauty of works in any other media....In twelve detailed step-by-step demonstrations, each step reproduced actual size, Petrie explains how to select your subject, begin delineating the drawing, proceed from the first lines and values, vignette the drawing for special compositional effects, and add the essential finishing touches. Landscape drawings with lucid captions are interspersed throughout this instructive book to complement the text. The demonstration subjects include drawings of: broadleaf trees, conifers, palms; mountians, hills, rocks; industrial landscapes, houses in the landscape, and cityscapes; boats, reflections on water, and harbor scenes. In the final chapter of the book, Petrie pairs a series of landscape drawings with photographs of the actual scenes that inspired them....144 pages, 8.25 x 11 inches, over 200 black and white illustrations, Index.
