Synopsis

This text presents a thorough exploration of the subject of light in painting. This book for artists looks at light from four perspectives: (1) seeing light, in which light and its impact on the visual world is discussed; (2) the nature of light, where the different kinds of light are examined - directional light effects, such as overhead lighting, backlighting, side lighting, and front lighting, natural light effects, such as early morning light, midday light, bright sunshine, overcast light, and indoor and artificial light effects; (3) technical influences in painting light - how painting light is influenced by the kind of painting medium used, how texture and colour affect light, and how different subjects absorb or reflect light; and (4) capturing the illusion of light, a section of step-by-step demonstrations that detail capturing the subtleties of light effects in painting.

About the Author

Albert Handell studied at the Art Students League of New York. Since 1961, he has received more than 50 prizes and awards. His paintings are in many public and private collections and numerous museums. Leslie Trainor Handell graduated from Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh, New York, with a B.A. in history, and from Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, with an M.A. in Spanish.
