Seller: Rural Hours, La Grande, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First edition. The dedication copy, inscribed by the editor to his parents below their names on the dedication page: "With love, Jack." The bookplate of Jackson Benson's mother, Freda Sperling Benson, is on the front pastedown. Benson provides the introduction and the final overview chapter, "Ernest Hemingway as Short Story Writer." Benson was for 31 years a professor of American Literature at San Diego State University and among other books he was the author of the acclaimed authorized biographiesThe True Adventures of John Steinbeck, Writer (1984), which won the PEN-WEST USA award for non-fiction; and Wallace Stegner: His Life and Work, which won the Evans Biography Award. His first book was Hemingway: The Writer's Art of Self-Defense, and this collection of essays for leading critics was his second. "A Comprehensive Checklist of Hemingway Short Fiction Criticism, Explication, and Commentary" is at rear. A copy that would be fine apart from a bump to the upper corners, namely the rear corner where it's affected the tips of some late pages; also some offsetting to front free endpaper and a paperclip impression on the dedication page. Thus very good or better. Without a dust jacket. A great association copy for the collection of a Hemingway devotee. Seller Inventory # 1375
