From the Author

TOUCHED BY FIRE Touches on a Little-Known True Tale
Tales of survival have always mesmerized me. When I read of characters' struggles against hurricanes and blizzards, tornadoes and disasters at sea, I feel as if I'm with them, fighting for my life as well. When I learned about the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871, I couldn't imagine why I'd never heard of it before. Then I discovered that the enormous conflagration, which killed hundreds and swept away entire towns, had occurred on the same day that Chicago burned. The legend of Mrs. O'Leary's cow nearly obliterated all memory of the far more devastating blaze.

The story of Peshtigo haunted my dreams and led me to visit the rebuilt town, though my home lies more than a thousand miles to the south. The resulting novel, Touched by Fire, is the tale of a woman who risks everything to masquerade as an innocent mail-order bride, her fiancé's battle-weary brother, who sees through her façade, and the forbidden attraction that soon burns brighter than the hottest flame. As Hannah's lies unravel, autumn breezes fan the fires into a raging conflagration. Hannah's love - and her very life - are threatened by the blaze - and a craving for revenge just as deadly as any wildfire.

Sincerely, Gwyneth Atlee
