Progress in Mathematics 2000, K-6 Develops mathematical thinking and understanding through: Problem Solving - through an abundance of problem-solving opportunities within each chapter, students continually develop and apply their problem-solving s. Reasoning - students use mental math, critical thinking, and logical reasoning s to solve real-world problems and make connections between mathematical concepts. Higher-Order Thinking - Moving On, a chapter at the end of each book, focuses on pre-algebra and algebraic concepts. Reviewing S - S Update, a multistrand review handbook at the beginning of each book, reinforces previously taught s. Separate S Update Practice Books are available in both English and Spanish. Communicating - Students are encouraged to use math vocabulary to explain, orally and in writing, their thinking processes about mathematical concepts and connections. Making Connections - In each chapter students focus on recognizing the relations between mathematical concepts and on learning to make cross-curricular connections. Using Manipulatives - Manipulatives are used to introduce mathematical concepts, enabling students to move from the concrete through a pictorial presentation to a symbolic understanding.
