More a lush book of history and inspiration than instruction, Caroline Clifton-Mogg's Textile Style devotes passionate attention to utilising the infinite variety of fabric throughout your home. Clifton-Mogg admits her aim is to inspire and educate on the decorative use of textiles, so no patterns or DIY instructions are featured. Instead, we're treated to a luscious visual evocation of fabric as used in the home and beyond. And we're treated to the history of textiles as adornment for home and body, and the use of textiles as not only covering or decoration, but as storyboard, storyteller, and history book. Though Clifton-Mogg is keen on understanding the thousands of years of textile history, she's ultimately more interested in how we interpret them now, in 21st-century daily life. To gain insight, the book's first section profiles five inspirational interior designers working with textiles today and their recent projects and philosophies. What follows is a beautiful photographic gallery featuring construction techniques and variations of textiles the world over, ranging from delicate linens and laces and colourful painted fabrics to woven textiles and intricate embroidery. The final section is resplendent with photos of Clifton-Mogg's theories in practice--soft furnishings incorporating rich textiles, upholstery using unique materials, curtains hung in new ways, walls embellished with flowing fabric. The result is visually pleasing but remarkably warm and unfussy.
