About the Author

The Author: Norman Loftis was born on the south side of Chicago and attended Phillips High School. He studied history and literature at Fisk University where the poet Robert Hayden was in residence. After college, he moved to New York where he became friends with an extraordinary group of poets which included W.H. Auden, John Ashbery and James Wright. During this time, he completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University where he studied literature and philosophy and began teaching in the City University system of New York. His publications include: Exiles and Voyages (1970), the acclaimed Black Anima (1973), and a novel, Life Force (1982). Loftis is also an award-winning film producer and director. His features include Shaman (1984) and Small Time (1991).
