Synopsis

In this text the authors review the characteristics of vision that are relevant to the production and appreciation of art in two ways. Firstly, by using various classic works of art as illustrations, the text gives insight into visual aspects of art and provides information on how the visual system may constrain or enhance what an artist can do. Secondly a review of the ocular diseases that have affected certain artists is presented to help the reader appreciate what the artists have faced in producing their works. The text demonstrates how understanding the role of visual function in artistic production is relevant to anyone interested in art.
