Matthew's method is to tell a story - the story of Jesus from birth to resurrection and what lies between. His message is that this Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, sent by the Father, and that we are saved by faith in him. The plot of the Jesus story is kept to the fore and every effort is made to view that story as a whole. Sociological factors are also shown to be of great importance. Matthew's community was in confrontation with another emerging sect, Formative Judaism, and the latter often seemed to have the upper hand. Matthew's Christians had to struggle to maintain the credibility of their faith world. This tension accounts for aspects of Matthew's Gospel that modern readers often find disturbing.
