Synopsis

Now in its sixth edition, "Language Files" is an introductory text that examines a variety of topics in linguistics. The organisation of the material enables students to develop a firm understanding of the fundamental concepts of linguistics and to build on and make connections among them. "Language Files" covers the core areas of linguistics - phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. It provides up-to-date comprehensive information on such topics as animal communication, psycholinguistics, pidgin and creole languages and speech synthesis. Changes in the sixth edition include a restructuring and augmentation of the psycholinguistics section and the addition of sections on language acquisition and neurolinguistics. The compilers have given new consideration to language in its social context - incorporating material on attitudes toward language and gender. New exercises, a glossary of terms, an improved index, and an accompanying audiotape with recordings of language samples and listening exercises are additional features of this edition. The book's format allows both for ease of use and flexibility. Every subject area is accorded its own series of files, each covering a different aspect of that subject. Instructors may determine their own order of topics and tailor the selection of material to the needs of their students. An instructor's manual is also available.
