Stanley B. Messer was Dean of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University from 2001-20016. Previous to becoming dean, he was Chairperson of the Department of Clinical Psychology at GSAPP from 1992-2001. He is interested in the application of psychodynamic theory and research to the brief and integrative therapies and has contributed to the debate on evidence-based practice. His most recent co-edited volumes are Essential Psychotherapies: Theory and Practice, 3rd ed. (2011), and Case Studies within Psychotherapy Trials: Expanding the Gold Standard (in press). He also co-authored Models of Brief Psychodynamic Therapy: A Comparative Approach (1995). Dr. Messer is an Associate Editor of the online journal Pragmatic Case Studies in Psychotherapy and is featured in the APA videotape, Brief Dynamic Therapy. He has lectured and given invited workshops in several international venues, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Israel, Norway and Poland. He is president-designate of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, an international association fostering dialogue among academicians and practitioners holding different theoretical/therapeutic orientations. Dr. Messer is an APA Fellow of the Society of Clinical Psychology, the Division of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology and the Society for Advancement of Psychotherapy.
