Synopsis

For their monumental work on the unification of the electromagnetic and weak-nuclear forces, Abdus Salam, Sheldon Glashow, and Steven Weinberg received the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics. That unification the discovery that the two forces are manifestations of a single combined force represents an important step toward the superunification of all the four forces in nature: the electromagnetic, weak-nuclear, strong-nuclear, and gravitational forces; in other words, the Theory of Everything. In this edited collection, David Cline, distinguished UCLA physicist, brings together for the first time the scientific papers that trace the Nobel award-winning discovery of the electro-weak force. Cline sets the stage for each of the eight sections of papers with an introduction that puts the papers in historical and scientific perspective. This book should prove useful for both graduate students and professionals in high-energy and particle physics, and in cosmology. The book includes seminal papers by Benvenuti, Cline, Galison, Higgs, Langacker, Mann, Rubbia, among others.
