A series of intimate, beautifully written essays on five key choreographers who have shaped contemporary dance -- Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Tyla Tharp, Trisha Brown, and Mark Morris -- lend insight into the distinctive style and personality of each artist.

A bit about the essays in this beautiful photo book.
I hope that the essays in this book will clarify, intensify, and enlarge the pleasure people take in seeing, and thinking about, dance. Set among the many wonderful photographs of a panoply of contemporary performers are five individual essays that are, in essence, portraits in words of five master choreographers, : Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Trisha Brown, Twyla Tharp, and Mark Morris. A final essay links them together. I am honored by the enthusiastic reception of our book, and warmed by the notion that Dance Ink: The Photographs is a book that the people who made it and the people who read it share as we would a live performance.
