Synopsis
Launched in Paris in 1924 as a kind of shock treatment for the art world, Surrealism has never lost its appeal, and many of its greatest exponents, such as Dali, Magritte, Miro, Duchamp, Ernst and de Chirico, are among the most popular artists of this century. They are, however, known primarily through their paintings, and this book offers a survey of Surrealist graphics. It contains two essays: Timothy Baum, author of "The Graphic Work of Rene Magritte", writes on the Surrealist as printmaker, and Robert Rainwater on the relationship between Surrealist artists and the writers and poets of the era (many outstanding Surrealist prints having been created as book illustrations). In addition, Riva Castleman discusses Surrealist collections in the USA. The reproductions, mostly of master prints by 23 artists, include work by Picasso, Man Ray, Tanguy, Masson, Matta, Brauner and Delvaux.
