In the last half century, North Carolina and the South have experienced rapid economic growth. Much of the best analysis of this progress came from two North Carolina-based research organizations: the Southern Growth Policies Board and MDC (originally a project of the North Carolina Fund). About the Author

Daniel P. Gitterman is an associate professor of public policy and a senior fellow at the Global Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has served as a senior policy adviser to North Carolina governor Beverly Perdue and is the author of Boosting Paychecks: The Politics of Supporting America's Working Poor.||Peter A.
