Bell I. Wiley was professor of history at Emory University and the author of many books on the Civil War, including The Life of Johnny Reb: The Common Soldier of the Confederacy and The Life of Billy Yank: The Common Soldier of the Union.
First published seventeen years after the end of the Civil War, 'Reminiscences Of Confederate Service, 1861-1865, by Francis W. Dawson, is the only memoir by a British citizen who saw active service in both the Confederate navy and army.

Francis Warrington Dawson (born Joseph Austin Reek in London in 1840) emigrated to the United States in 1861 on the CSA steamer Nashville in order to join the Confederate service. He soon decided agiant naval service and enlisted in the artillery and was promoted to the rank of captain in April, 1864. Dawson utilizes his skill as a journalist to write descriptions of his experiences on the blockade runner Nashville, with the Army of Northern Virginia, and as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. He gives an eyewitness account of the wounding of General James Longstreet and of major battles, including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg.
