Charles-Pierre Baudelaire was born in Paris in 1821. His first publication was Le Salon de 1845, and he earned renown as an art critic and as a translator of Edgar Allan Poe. As a poet, his fame rests on Les Fleurs du mal. The collection was published in 1857, and certain poems were condemned as an offence against public morals; the book is now considered one of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century French literature. Baudelaire went to Brussels, where he hoped to earn money by lecturing; but his hopes foundered, his health gave way, and he was taken back to Paris, where he died in 1867.

"Intrinsically violent and populated with outrageous characters, the "sweet science" of boxing has held the public's attention throughout its long and tumultuous history. While the drama of combat lies at the foundation of boxing's appeal, it is the men who climb between the ropes who have captured the imagination of the masses. Their deeds both in and outside the ring have inspired adulation and scorn in almost equal measure." 269 pages. "For many boxing legends, the glory of the prize ring was quickly superseded by physical and mental ruin, illness and sometimes tragic death. Some were involved in crime; some were victims of homicide; some killed themselves. 'Boxing Babylon' reveals the reasons for these self-destructions, taking a dramatic look at the tragedies and scandals surrounding many of the sport's greatest international stars."
