Synopsis

The sinking of the British troopship HMT Rohna off the Algerian coast in November 1943 led to the loss of more than 1,000 American GIs who were on board the stricken vessel. US historian Carlton Jackson here probes and narrates the tragedy in a masterpiece of research and reconstruction. As with the similar sinking of the British troopship Lancastria in 1940 the loss of life was so massive that the event was covered up and kept secret for security reasons - actually a fear of damaging public morale. Jackson brings this forgotten disaster to light - interviewing survivors, and the Luftwaffe pilot who dropped the guided bomb that hit the Rohna. The publication of the book led to the formation of a Rohna Association and restored a forgotten disaster to its rightful place in public memory.
