This work was written by a mounted ranger active in the Los Angeles area in the 1850s where gunfights and general lawlessness were common. He sketches numerous pioneers, politicians, military figures, and outlaws, and vividly describes riots and shootouts in the city streets and campaigns against Indians and bandits.
