With such words, Kiowa and Comanche people express their deep connection to their traditional lattice cradles. Prevalent from 1870 to 1930, these cradles represented a unique, yet extremely practical, art form. These "gifts of pride and love" reflected close networks, which remained intact despite the difficult transition to reservation life, new religions, government boarding schools, and allotment of tribal lands. This book, a beautiful homage to the artisans who crafted cradleboards, includes a history of the origins of lattice cradles as well as essays by eleven descendants of cradle makers. Forty color and over eighty black-and-white photographs vividly display the creativity and imagination found in these lovingly produced cradles. Reminding people of the Kiowas’ and the Comanches’ long, arduous struggles to create and maintain a viable identity, the cradles featured in this book connect us to the past.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Imboden, Cathy - Text Design (illustrator). Second Printing. 208 Pages. Near Fine condition with no defects noted. Interior text pages are flawless. This book is the gritty, humorous, unflinchingly courageous story of five children growing up on a cattle ranch in the remote Valley of the Dry Cimarron in northeastern New Mexico near the little border town of Kenton, Oklahoma. Narrated years later by the oldest daughter, LaVerne, it is a vivid and authentic portrait of ranching life between the two world wars, from 1925, when the family moved to the Goodson Ranch from a half-dugout claim shack in Colorado, to 1936, when they began to disperse. During those years, people in the region endured blizzards, sick and maddened animals, drought, the Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression-with stoic good humor. In Girl on a Pony, cowboys go about their daily tasks, teaching the children all they know. Women endure the hardships of life in an isolated area, coping with the brutal labor ranch life requires of them, and maintaining touches of beauty and civilization where they can-creating lawns from relentlessly rocky soil, holding dances for their children, and painstakingly tatting when all else fails. Contents in Ten Chapters: The Country, The Women, Cowboys, The Children, Company's Coming, Civilizing Children, Celebrations, Calamities, Drought and the Great Depression, and Taking Leave.
