For more than 3 thousand years the Zapotecs have occupied the fertile valley of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. There, during the Classic stage of Mesoamerican culture (ca. A.D. 100-900), Zapotec princes and priests ruled a complex theocratic state, and the temple city of Monte Alban became one of the great cultural centres of Mesoamerica.

The Zapotecs have occupied the Valley of Oaxaca in Mexico for over 3000 years. During the Classic sage of Mesoamerican culture Zapotec princes and priest ruled a complex theocratic stste and the temple city of Monte Alban became one of the great cultural centres of Mesoamerica. The decline of Zapotec civilization began before 900AD with a shift toward militarism, and continued with the arrival of the Mixtecs in the 13th century, the rise of Mixtec-Puebla culture and the invasion of Mexica indians in the 15th century. Ultimately the princely elite and most of their traditions were ended by the Spanish conquest which reduced the Zapotec and Mixtecs to rural peasantry. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 019111
