Structural Equation Modeling With AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming (Multivariate Applications Series) - Hardcover

9780805833225: Structural Equation Modeling With AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming (Multivariate Applications Series)

Synopsis

This book illustrates the ease with which AMOS 4.0 can be used to address research questions that lend themselves to structural equation modeling (SEM). This goal is achieved by: 1) presenting a nonmathematical introduction to the basic concepts and applications of structural equation modeling; 2) demonstrating basic applications of SEM using AMOS 4.0; and 3) highlighting features of AMOS 4.0 that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.

Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through 10 SEM applications from model specification to estimation to the assessment and interpretation of the output. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by:

  • a statement of the hypothesis being tested;
  • a schematic representation of the model under study;
  • the use and function of a wide variety of icons and pull-down menus;
  • a full explanation of related AMOS Graphic input models and output files;
  • a model input file based on AMOS BASIC; and
  • the published reference from which each application was drawn.

Review

"I believe that Byrne's book is a valuable companion to those who aspire to analyse their data with SEM. It is written in a clear style, richly illustrated, and discusses most of the problems readers will encounter in their own research....also suitable for use as a textbook on structural equation modelling." - European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology

"...considerable effort is devoted to introducing statistical principles, concepts, and measures in nonmathematical terms....its excellent treatment of the practical aspects of modeling and because it provides useful and accessible material about some of the statistical aspects of SEM." - Contemporary Psychology

Synopsis

This book provides a non-mathematical introduction to basic concepts and sound applications of structural equation modelling (SEM) based on the increasingly popular and innovative AMOS statistical programme. Intended as a practical guide to the use of SEM, the author "walks" the reader through ten conceptually different applications that include confirmatory factor analytic and full latent variable models pertinent to both single and multigroup data. Also demostrated is the maximum likelihood approach to modelling based on incomplete data, as well as to the bootstrap procedure. Although all demonstrated applications are structured within the framework of AMOS Graphics, this book also discusses and demonstrates the programme's graphical approach to SEM, the alternative approach to AMOS Basic, using an equation format. In particular, AMOS Basic is fully described and demonstrated with respect to the first application; for all remaining applications, one AMOS Basic input file is presented and described relevant to only one aspect of the model under study.

In general, each application in this book is accompanied by the following: a statement of the hypothesis to be tested; a schematic representation of the model under study; a full explanation bearing on related AMOS Graphics input models; a full explanation and interpretation of selected AMOS output files; one model input file based on AMOS Basic; and the published reference from which the application was drawn.
